Whether it’s the beauty and grace of Ballet or the fast pace movements of swing, dancing is both entertaining and expressive. One of the most popular dance types throughout the world is the tango. The origins of the tango are attributed to Argentina and Uruguay. However, when the dancers flocked to Europe, the dance became even popular. The phenomenon, which started in the 20th century, would begin in Paris, and quickly spread to other European locales; like Berlin and London. It wouldn’t be until 1913 that the tango would arrive in America. However, when it did, Americans (particularly New Yorkers) would modify the style; such as Albert Newman’s “Minuet” tango. Now, there are eleven different tango styles: tango liso, tango salon, show tango, tango oriental, tango argentino, tango milonguero, ballroom tango, tango nuevo, tango orillero, tango canyengue, and Finnish tango. The various styles require different levels of closeness. Some types have partners dancing in an open embrace (space between dancers), while others have performers touching (upper thigh/hip region or chest to chest). The tango remains a popular genre. In-fact, last year UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) named the dance a world heritage.
